Colorado Golden Trout - Original Art Feature

Colorado Gold was inspired by the countless hours I spent as a kid chasing Brook trout in the Little Manistee River in Northern Michigan. The goal of this piece was to capture the fall vibe and vibrant colors of the brookies.

From a technical standpoint, this painting pushed my skills in ways I hadn’t explored before. I worked with layers of translucent glazes to build depth, using light and shadow to give the fish a sense of dimension that made them almost come to life. The reflections on the water were particularly challenging, as I had to balance the delicate ripples and stillness of the river while keeping the focus on the trout.

One of the more intricate parts of the process was the texture of the trout’s scales and the subtle gradient of their colors. I used a combination of fine brushwork and soft blending techniques to achieve the shimmering iridescence of the fish's body. The surrounding autumn leaves and riverbed were painted with a mix of bold strokes and soft washes to contrast the sharpness of the trout, creating a harmony between the details and the impressionistic elements.

Creating this painting felt like a journey itself, from the meticulous work on the fish to the broader, sweeping strokes that captured the feel of the landscape. In the end, I wanted the viewer to feel the same wonder I experienced every time I looked into the clear water, captivated by the delicate beauty of the brook trout.
