'Reflections' - Four years in the making

Some paintings come together fast—like the fish that light up and charge the teaser before disappearing again. Others take their time. This one took 4.5 years.
“Reflections” is easily one of the most demanding and meaningful pieces I’ve ever created. It started on the flats in the Florida Keys, where I found myself waist-deep, watching a small school of bonefish cruising just beneath the surface. The light was unreal—reflections shimmering above, the fish barely visible below. I knew right then I had to paint it from a perspective we don’t often see in the shallows: looking up.
Capturing that feeling—the clarity of the water, the distortions on the surface, the tension in the fish—was a challenge I didn’t expect to take so long. But every time I came back to it, I saw something new. Something I wanted to push further. It became a study in patience, and easily my longest commission to date.
The final piece is oil on canvas, and features three bonefish—a tight little squad moving with quiet purpose. There’s motion in their stillness, and something peaceful about the way the reflections above seem to blur time.
It’s headed to a private home in California, but it’ll always carry the soul of the Keys.
After all that time, this one landed in my top three favorite pieces I’ve ever done.
Thanks for following along on the journey.
